2009: The Year of the Dick

I could write a verbose article about all of the antics and chaos that ensued in 2009, but that would just deter us all from watching the MASH-UP Video.

HAPPY HOMO NEW YEAR from HOMOPOP! Peace on Earth ya'll. Thank you to all of our loyal supporters for following us throughout the year. 2010 is already shaping up to be balls-out fabulous. Here's a sneak preview: Queer Idol (Dwayne and Al think they are on the show of American Idol with Adam Lambert), MORE of Matthew Montgomery and an exclusive interview with............... JANE LYNCH! And that's just in January.

Love ya. Mean it!

All You Can Eat with Freakin' MINK STOLE!!

We have been saving this little nugget for a long time waiting for the right opportunity to unveil our very special interview when Robby O catches up with Mink Stole. If you don't know who Mink is then a) we might have to take away your gay card and b) you better watch every John Waters' movie ever made because she is the one staple actor in every. single. film. (If you ask who John Waters is then I feel very, very, very, very, very sad for you.)

Ok maybe I'm being a little harsh because I am sure some of you 20-something gays may not have been born yet during the hay-day of such classic queer cinema like Female Trouble, which is currently out of print or Pink Flamingos. But I am sure you have seen Mink (pictured here with Rexx during Philadelphia QFest) in recent independent hits like Out at the Wedding and A Dirty Shame. And that's why we are here! Recently, the Eating Out series has birthed a new feature and Mink is once again part of it. Traditionally Stole portrays the quirky female character that always throws a curve ball into every plot and in Eating Out: All You Can Eat (the third in the series is written by the dynamic gay writing duo Q. Allan BrockaRick & Steve & Boy Culture, and Phillip J. Bartell) she stars as Aunt Helen. You have to see the movie because we aren't going to give you any more details my friends. But know this... the third installment features young, hot boys—twinks and studs alike—so run right out and get your copy today! Or just order online here.

Regardless, we are so thrilled that the legendary, avante-garde actress was able to take time out of her busy schedule (she is busy with her band and advice column) and chat with us a for a few minutes. We are not worthy Mink Stole. We are not worthy.

Do You DARE? We Did.

I don't know if you all know this, but there is a sexy, indie gay-themed film coming out in theaters in NYC and LA this Friday on Nov. 13th called Dare. It might have fallen off your radar or maybe you haven't heard of it yet, but this hot little gem is a flick you need to check out. Since Brokeback Mountain exploded on the scene a few years ago, quality gay indie movies seem to have jumped the shark like Fonzy did in the Happy Days' Hawaiian episode. Now it seems that almost every movie being released has some sort of "homo" character as part of the supporting cast who's listed waaaay down at the bottom of imdb.com film page. After wading through the muck for a few years, along comes this seductive and provocative coming-of-age narrative that will restore your love for independent films again.

Dare (starring Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford, Ashley Springer, Sandra Bernhard, Alan Cumming and Ana Gasteyer) orginally splashed down during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival where it received a whole lot of buzz, and shortly afterwards director Adam Salky and writer David Brind landed a distribution deal for their baby. So we sent film critic Robby O on the case to interview the thought-provoking director and here's what he had to say... READ MORE

STALKING THE STARS w/ ROBBY O

Robby O was so excited when I gave him the assignment to interview Matthew Montgomery during the his recent trip to the 2009 Philadelphia Qfest that he basically called off of work for a couple of weeks to to wat every movie and webisode he has been in like Back Soon, Socket and even Gone But Not Forgotten. I don't know how he did it, but he even got bootleg copies of Redwoods (2nd feature from director David Lewis) and David Kitteridge's Pornography (we mention this little gem before) before it screened during the festival. Hey, I wasn't going to ask because if it makes for a better interview. Anyway, Robby basically found the poor soul hung over by a tree. But like a good HOMOPOP soldier, he honed in on his target and attacked.... And this is what we captured.

So as you can see, this is how we get big stars to write for us. Who's next?

Interview with Soundless Wind Chime writer/director/producer Kit Hung

Filmmaker Kit Hung was born and raised in Hong Kong, studied film at the Art Institute of Chicago and now lives with his partner in Switzerland. He’s no stranger to immersing himself in different cultures and it certainly shows in his first feature Soundless Wind Chime – an emotional, kaleidoscopic study of love, death, grief and the search for solace.

Blending fantasy and reality in a non-linear structure, the film follows Ricky on his journey from Hong Kong to Switzerland in search of his deceased Swiss lover Pascal’s past. Through memories and flashbacks, we’re given an intimate view of their culturally diverse relationship.

It is easily one of the most challenging and experimental feature length films in the gay film festival circuit at the moment and has been receiving rave reviews as it screens around the world.

Writer/director/producer Kit Hung took time out of his busy schedule to speak with Homopop about Soundless Wind Chime.

Busy Little Boys

What the fuck have we been doing you ask? Well, we've been running around the City of Brotherly Love like a couple of crazy bandits kickin' it with fabulous fags like Chad Allen and this awesome Adrian Brody look-alike Eric Debets who starred with Chad in this sweet, sexy film Hollywood je t'aime.

Then I heard rumors that Robby O sneak attacked cutie-pie Matthew Montgomery in the park and apparently filmed it! Matt is attending Philadelphia Qfest for the 2 films he stars in: David Kittredge's David Lynch-esque Pornography and the endearing drama Redwoods. I can't to see the footage!

Also Cam Buckingham - our snarky Aussie - is in town from the UK and there are rumors that Keeneye Reeves is running around town too! I can't believe she crawled out of her porn hole, but hopefully we can capturing him on camera too! So boys... stay tuned for our whacky and wild coverage, but if you are Jones-ing for some info, our good friends at Phillygaycalendar.com has been all over it - and tweeting about it! So get out from under a rock and get to Philadelphia Qfest yo! (and because I am a social networking whore... follow up on twitter too and if you are lucky; we will follow you.

He likes his movies dark, his boys light and his coffee somewhere in the middle. He is also very proud to maintain one of the strangest and most varied IPod music libraries that you’re likely to come across.

Favorite gay flicks: Fox & His Friends, My Own Private Idaho, and Urbania.

Favorite gay books: Queer, Querelle, and Before Night Falls.

Second gayest thing he’s done in bed with another man: Watched Mamma Mia! (on a projector, in surround sound) with the sing-along track on. Can you guess what the first gayest thing I ever did was?

Interview with WEAK SPECIES' Director Dan Faltz

Provocative and, at times, gruesome, Weak Species offers a thoughtful, yet brutal, glimpse into two troubled teen lives that caused audience members to faint during a screening at the Inside Out Toronto Lesbian & Gay Film and Video Film Festival. This powerful short is sweeping the 2009 film festival circuit and has also captured a couple of awards for Best Short at the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival and Best Narrative Short at FilmOut San Diego.

The film follows two high school students - with wildly contrasting perspectives – on a self-destructive, sex-driven downward spiral. Steve (Brendan Bradley, Redwoods [see Scott Cranin's review here]), a self-obsessed artist with high aspirations, seduces and dumps other gay classmates in an effort to feel superior. George (Erik Scott Smith), a drug-addled loner, uses sex as a way to escape reality – hooking up with anonymous older men for violent encounters.

HOMOPOP.com's newest contributor Robby O had a chance to catch up with the talented director Dan Faltz who brilliantly taps famed-writer Dennis Cooper for this gritty short film.
